The SABC are engaging in a pogrom against free thought and expression. The SABC is the closest we have to a public broadcasting service and as such should be supporting the goals of section 16 of the constitution which provides inter alia, that,
- “Everyone has the right to freedom of expression, which includes-
(a) freedom of the press and other media;
(b) freedom to receive or impart information or ideas;
(c) freedom of artistic creativity; and
(d) academic freedom and freedom of scientific research.”
This is about as close as you get to a constitutional guarantee of free speech and the SABC is clearly engaged in censorship of any ideas that might tarnish the image of the ruling elite and clearly are doing so in breach of section 16 of the constitution.
The DDF would also argue that the SABC’s actions are flagrant violations of other constitutionally guaranteed rights, namely sections 18 and 19 which guarantee freedom of association and the political rights of our citizens. By denying free exchange of ideas, by association, the SABC are denying citizens their rights in terms of section 18 and 19 of the constitution.
Heaven forbid that thinkers be allowed to express their thoughts to the masses. The masses might get the wrong ideas. Heaven forbid free thought or opinion.
The Direct Democracy Forum have some ideas about how to guarantee freedom of expression – see the DDF policies on communications.
The solution to this is change at the top of the SABC which requires a change of government, so the solution is in your hands, which you can deliver to the nation in the 2014 elections.
The buck stops at the ballot box
